Acne, which we know as pimples, is the most common skin problem today. 85% of adults experience it at some point in their lives and it goes away and heals, while in the remaining 15%, it becomes a difficult and advanced problem that reaches serious dimensions. It is seen equally in men and women.

It appears earlier in girls in adolescence. It appears at the age of 17-18 in girls and 18-19 in boys and starts to improve towards the age of 21-23. Sometimes it can last up to the age of 40.

What is acne?

It is a disease of the glands in our skin that secrete oil. This normally secreted oil comes out on the skin and is removed. The secretion control of the oil glands is under the influence of sex hormones. For this reason, the amount of oil secretion has increased even more during adolescence. The canal that forms the mouth of the oil sac is clogged with a plug formed as a result of the secreted oil thickening. The main reason for the formation of acne is this clogging. Bacteria in the skin seep into this canal and cause inflammation of the oil glands, resulting in acne.

What is the general appearance?

It is in the form of swelling filled with inflamed oil, clogged with a black or dark brown plug, or cysts and nodules that are felt as hardness. Also known as blackheads. These cysts leave scar marks (scars) on the skin as they heal. Preventing the formation of scars is the most important goal of acne treatment. Because treating these scars is quite difficult and laborious. It is most often seen in areas where there are the most oil glands on the skin. It also forms on the face, back and chest areas.

Why should acne be treated?

The biggest purpose of the treatment is to prevent the formation of acne scars. If you get under the doctor’s control in the early period, the possibility of scars forming and acne spreading is significantly reduced. These scars need to be treated because they will cause an unpleasant appearance in the future and sometimes cause serious psychological problems.

How is it treated?

Topical treatments work well for pimples that form in adolescence. The antibiotics given are also effective. The aim of antibiotic treatment is to reduce the number of bacteria that can cause inflammation and to prevent the inflammation they cause. Since oil secretion increases in adolescence due to hormonal changes, hormone therapy can also be applied to prevent this situation. The most effective drug treatment method is the treatment with vitamin A compounds called retinoids. It is avoided to be used frequently due to its side effects on many organs in the body, especially the liver. In addition, its use in pregnant women is absolutely inconvenient as it causes serious damage to babies. It is also not used in patients with liver and kidney failure. However, it is a very effective treatment method. It prevents the oil glands from over-secreting, thus preventing the formation of an environment for acne in these glands. It is necessary to be patient in the treatment. It is usually a skin problem that goes away on its own and can be treated.

How are the remaining scars treated?

Acne scars are treated with Laser or Dermabrasion, a type of skin sanding method. The aim of sanding or peeling with Laser is to erase the formed scars, bring the uneven skin to a single level and prepare the environment for a new skin to emerge. The new skin that forms within 2-4 weeks after the application begins to appear. These methods can also be used while acne is active. Since the skin is peeled with sanding or laser, the mouth of the oil glands is widened in this way, and the oil formed here can easily come out onto the skin and no accumulation occurs inside. Sanding, also called mechanical peeling, is an extremely effective treatment method. It provides a significant improvement.
